Report: Groningen police sells bikes to students

It’s half past 6 on a Friday morning, it’s dark and cold, but there is a line of people waiting in front of the bike depot under the public library. Why are they here at this crazy hour? An after party with free beer? Nope. They are waiting to draw a number for the bi-weekly bike sale of the Groningen municipality. Each bike that gets confiscated by local police (mostly for bad parking or abandonment), gets a fix-up and is sold for a good price. But you gotta be there early! Once you have your number, you wait until 8.30 a.m. to pick a bike and pay (cash only). A great way to get a cheap bike without running the risk of buying a stolen bike!
